Dig in, don’t wait

Dig in, don’t wait

I don’t know about you, but we’re a little over half-raw damper and the sludgy mess masquerading as porridge on the fold-out table at camp. Don’t get me wrong, these are goooooddd when the time calls for it, but there’s something about carving out time in your day of rest to cook something delicious over an open fire.

We know it sounds like a pipedream, but it is possible to eat well, give your tastebuds a flavoursome treat and avoid packing the kitchen sink with dishes.

We’ve curated five of our favourite recipes you can try on your next adventure to level up your campfire cuisine:

  1. Shakshuka

Maybe you like digging around for that muesli bar you swore you packed, but if you don’t, this shakshuka is the perfect choice for a gourmet outdoor brekky option. Keep it super simple or load it up with plenty of extras.
  2. Seafood Feast

Simpler than it sounds, this one’s for the campers who like the finer things in life. Designed for a lightweight grill, it’s perfect for those with a few weight restrictions to work with.
  3. Pulled Pork

You don’t need to plug in your slow cooker for this tender treat! The perfect thing for one of those lazy afternoons after you’ve spent the morning exploring. Just chuck it all in your camp oven and keep an eye on it for three hours while it does its thing.
  4. Mulled Wine

Even if you’re sticking to the humble jaffle for dinner, you can take things to a new level with a mug of mulled wine warming you from the inside out. Easily halved or doubled to serve whoever you’re adventuring with, preparation for this recipe can be done before you head away to save you time when the fire is roaring.
  5. Apple Dutch Baby

If there’s a better feeling than someone revealing they organised dessert just seconds before you were planning to wriggle into your sleeping bag, we’d love to hear it. You can be that person with this recipe up your sleeve.

And if you’re parking up for a little while and want to avoid reading a recipe off your phone, we love Harry Fisher’s recently published Fire to Fork recipe book!

Happy cooking adventurers, lettuce know what you sling over the fire this weekend,
Nakie
