When was the last time you took a deep breath?

When was the last time you took a deep breath?
Not a sigh, not a breath-holding-rage, but something that filled your lungs and expanded the sides of your body.

Something that calmed the heartbeat and eased the tension in your shoulders.

Seriously, think about the last time.

In truth, I don’t do the big breath thing very often. As a result, I feel the pace of life slipping through my fingers. The morning alarm, the half-arsed breakfast, 8 hours at work, a few behind the TV and then in bed, behind the phone. Whooooshhhh goes our lives.

We’re almost smack bang in the middle of the year and if you’re anything like me you’re thinking, "oh my gawddd wasn’t it January only yesterday?!”

I want to inspire you to slow down this weekend. To block out a few hours with the people you love to sit outside and watch the day go by. Cook up a BBQ at the local park, go for a winter swim. And if you want a little more inspiration, we’ve compiled a list of a few things that have helped us slow down recently and connect to the expansiveness of life itself.

Enjoy your weeks,
Nakie

One of Australia’s most decorated writers Tim Winton released a 3-part docu-series on ABC iView last month on Ningaloo Reef. It is SPECTACULAR.

Put the kids to bed, pour yourself a cup of something warm (even if you won’t drink it) and snuggle under something soft. Indulge all the senses and, mostly importantly, keep your phone out of reach.

I read The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton the other day, a classic from my childhood. Four kids climb to the top of a tree to explore magical lands.

As a voracious reader, I often get so caught up in Serious Books that I forget how much joy there is to be found in the children’s aisle. If you have kids, raid their bookshelves. If you don’t, head to the library.

If you like ‘cry on your bedroom floor in the dark’ kind of music, might I suggest lying under a tree and listening to the entirety of The National’s new album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein?

There’s some Tay Tay in there and some Sufjan Stevens for good measure. It’s nice and slow and soft and emotional and watching the trees above you while you listen will give you that looking-out-of-the-train-window-in-a-movie feeling.

Go for a walk around the block without technology. No music. No phone. No watch connected to your Strava. It doesn’t have to be a long walk, but I want you to do one thing while you’re out there: smell.

Smell the dinner on the stove of your neighbour’s place, the dog sh*t someone didn’t pick up on the median strip, the smell of the gum trees high up in the park. Smell is such a powerful sense, and it can be really grounding when we take time to notice.
